Director's Update 8/17

I hope the first few days of school have been treating everyone well. I would like to first announce the big growth in our elementary band programs. Last year, we had roughly 25 students in 5th/6th grade band combined. This year, we are looking at having nearly 40! God has shown me time and time again He is faithful and so glad to have so many students.

Our practice schedule for the fall will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:30. Students need to bring water to each rehearsal. It gets pretty hot around that time.

Our first game is Friday. It is at TSA. Kick-off is at 7:30. Students need to be at the school roughly around 5:45 and ready for warm-up at 6:45. Band students need to wear their "Band of Gold" shirts to the game under their uniform. Your child will need black socks (no ankle socks), black MTX marching shoes, and black gloves (excluding percussion; no grippers on the palms). I will try to have a couple spare pair, but not a whole lot.

Each game a child misses or does not march due to certain reasons, that child receives a "0" for that event. In order to get the "0" cleared, the child needs to type a two page, double-spaced paper on a topic/composer of my choosing. Not having all uniform parts can result in this incident.

The school will have a pep rally during school Friday. All wind/percussionists need to wear their "Band of Gold" shirts on Friday for the pep rally.

Next week we have a Thursday night game against Westfield. Right now, the plan is we will have practice from 3:30-4:45 (inside at first, then outside to march what we will be doing Friday night). After 4:45, we will eat pizza for a quick bite for dinner before the game. We plan to leave the school around 5:30 in order to get there by 6:15 and be ready to march in the stadium. I will announce on Thursday after practice, but if your child wants pizza, they need to bring $5 by next Tuesday, August 24.

The two contests we are looking at going to will be in Weaver, AL, on Sept. 25 and Blackshear, GA, on Oct. 16. These are both small/medium band friendly contests and will help us grow and be competitive.

Before we travel Thursday, I need everyone in band, dance, and color guard, to look on the website at the band handbook and print off pages that need to be filled out for insurance purposes. If I don't have your child's information, they can not go with us to Westfield. These need to be turned in ASAP.

If you have not paid up your fees for band, football breakfast, or booster club, please do so soon. Mrs. Sikes will be getting together statements for everyone and will be sending those home with your child very soon.

I hope things are going well for you. Let me know if there is anything I can do!
